Floods & Forestry – the Grand Forks Flood documentary series

March 27, 2020

The first episode of the Grand Forks Flood Documentary series aired March 27 on Youtube.  It is available to view for free here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBqWOHZ9YTc

As some most of you know, our Board Member, Jennifer Houghton, is a survivor of the 2018 Grand Forks flood.  She was inspired by her experience to film a documentary about what happened in Grand Forks.

For the documentary, she wanted to look into the causes of our flood.  She was guided to interview Herb Hammond about forests, ecology, and the link between clear cut forestry and our flood.  Herb opened her eyes to the conditions of our forests and the problems of industrial forestry in BC.

She was also referred to forester Fred Marshall because he lives in our region.  When she interviewed Fred, he pointed out the local forest conditions and specific forestry practices that contributed to the flood.

The documentary series will be about 7-8 episodes airing once per week on Youtube. The first few episodes show our experiences right after the flood.  In the later episodes, the connection between forestry and the flood are addressed.

Please share the documentary far and wide.  You can subscribe to the Youtube channel for all the updates.  You can also get updates by following the flood documentary on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Grand-Forks-BC-Flood-Documentary-1042454675895234/

As Grand Forks moves into spring freshet season we are once again faced with high snow pack and the strong possibility that it will flood again.  The question is:  how are we going to deal with a flood during a pandemic?
