SUMMARY:EARTH DAY RELEASE OF FILM SERIES - CONNECTING FLOODS TO FORESTRY
DESCRIPTION:Can windmills and solar panels save us?  Has the green movement been distracted by shiny objects instead of focusing on the real problem? \nPlanetary deforestation is having huge impacts on communities worldwide. \nWhat role have humans played in our fragile ecosystems? \nIn May 2018\, the small town of Grand Forks was hit by a catastrophic flood.  Was the flood caused by climate change and deforestation?  This multi-year film project follows the stories of flood survivors\, interviews foresters\, ecologists\, and visits flood damaged homes and clear cut forests in southern British Columbia\, Canada. \nWhat role have humans played in our fragile ecosystems? \nWhen governments allow corporations to control the ecosystems\, what are the impacts on humans? \nVIEW EPISODE 3 HERE:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLXACcxpjeY&t=23s \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Eco Expo & presentations temporarily postponed due to coronavirus situation
DESCRIPTION:Boundary Eco Expo \nThe presentations and Expo have been indefinitely postponed while we wait out the coronavirus situation.  Take care everyone! \nPRESENTATIONS \nThe Harrop-Procter Community Forest will be making a presentation about their cooperative on April 4. Harrop Procter manages 11\,300 hectares of Crown Land and runs a small sawmill. They practice ecosystem-based forestry and sell lumber products directly from their mill in Harrop. Their mandate is to practice socially and environmentally progressive forestry that protects local watersheds while creating sustainable jobs in their community. \nThere will also be a presentation by BFWSS about our watershed project\, another one about ecosystems\, and activities for kids.  We might also screen some short films\, such as Intelligent Trees (Suzanne Simard)\, and the Grand Forks Flood documentary series – other ideas are welcome too.  There will also be a BFWSS membership and info table. \nEXPO DISPLAYS & TABLES FOR GROUPS \nThe Expo tables are for environmental\, land\, stewardship\, watershed\, outdoors\, and wildlife groups. \nThe Expo will probably be about 4 hours either in the afternoon or morning. \nDetailed information will be available the week of March 9.  To book a table please email boundaryforest@gmail.com \nVOLUNTEER!! \nThis is where we need your help! Volunteers are needed to plan the event and to help with set up and manning our membership table on April 4. Planning starts this week and next week. Please email boundaryforest@gmail.com \nHelp us get the community involved!

SUMMARY:Floods & Forestry - the Grand Forks Flood documentary series
DESCRIPTION:The first episode of the Grand Forks Flood Documentary series aired March 27 on Youtube.  It is available to view for free here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBqWOHZ9YTc \nAs some most of you know\, our Board Member\, Jennifer Houghton\, is a survivor of the 2018 Grand Forks flood.  She was inspired by her experience to film a documentary about what happened in Grand Forks. \nFor the documentary\, she wanted to look into the causes of our flood.  She was guided to interview Herb Hammond about forests\, ecology\, and the link between clear cut forestry and our flood.  Herb opened her eyes to the conditions of our forests and the problems of industrial forestry in BC. \nShe was also referred to forester Fred Marshall because he lives in our region.  When she interviewed Fred\, he pointed out the local forest conditions and specific forestry practices that contributed to the flood. \nThe documentary series will be about 7-8 episodes airing once per week on Youtube. The first few episodes show our experiences right after the flood.  In the later episodes\, the connection between forestry and the flood are addressed. \nPlease share the documentary far and wide.  You can subscribe to the Youtube channel for all the updates.  You can also get updates by following the flood documentary on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Grand-Forks-BC-Flood-Documentary-1042454675895234/ \nAs Grand Forks moves into spring freshet season we are once again faced with high snow pack and the strong possibility that it will flood again.  The question is:  how are we going to deal with a flood during a pandemic?
