I studied disasters – this is why forestry is failing

In 2018, Grand Forks experienced what was described as BC’s “most catastrophic flood.” What caused this disaster as well as the increased fires, drought, and landslides over the past 10 years? Climate change? Are conservationists to blame for the downturn in the forest industry’s profits?

This video clip shares Jennifer Houghton’s journey to uncover the root causes, starting with a conversation with Forest Ecologist Herb Hammond, who showed her the stark reality of widespread clearcutting in the Kettle River watershed. The damage from decades of industrial logging—enormous primary forest loss and degraded watersheds – has reshaped BC’s forests and communities.

This clip shows the escalating costs of wildfires, floods, and disasters related to forest cover loss. BC’s forests are in crisis, but solutions are possible.
