The Forest–Climate Link: The Missing Piece in BC’s Climate Plan

Everyone talks about cutting fossil fuels. But there’s another massive source of climate pollution hiding in plain sight: industrial logging.

In Canada, logging releases more greenhouse gases than the oil sands – yet these emissions don’t even count in our official totals. When we clearcut a primary forest, we lose more than just trees. We lose:

  • The carbon they store (gone in days, takes centuries to replace)
  • The shade that keeps streams cold for salmon
  • The living “sponge” that reduces floods and droughts
  • The resilience that protects communities from fire

This isn’t just a global problem we can shrug at – BC has the power to change this right now. The New Forest Act offers a ready-to-go plan to protect what’s left, restore what’s been damaged, and manage forests in a way that actually helps the climate instead of making it worse.

Then share it with your MLA, your council, your climate group. Let’s put forests back at the centre of climate action where they belong.
