British Columbia’s forests are at a crossroads. While the provincial government can’t control global climate forces, it can reform forestry practices on public lands (94% of BC land is publicly owned).
In this video, Jennifer Houghton, manager of the Power of Forests project, highlights why BC’s current forestry legislation is outdated and rooted in an industrial paradigm—and why we urgently need a New Forest Act based on ecological management principles.
Key Points Covered in This Video
The flaws in BC’s current forestry legislation:
➡️ Corporate tenures and self-monitoring
➡️ Lack of accountability for ecological degradation
➡️ Minimal penalties for harmful practices
➡️Why piecemeal reform isn’t enough—comprehensive change is essential.
Our bold proposal:
✅ Repeal and replace outdated acts (e.g., the Forest Act, FRPA).
✅ Transition to ecological management with a Nature-Directed Stewardship (NDS) framework.
✅ Create legislation that prioritizes: Ecosystem integrity and resilience, Indigenous and community decision-making, Local economies and stable jobs
