Contrary to the oversimplified narrative of heavy rainfall, Dr. Alila reveals cues pointing to the underlying issues—many of which have been ignored by conventional hydrology.
In this clip from a longer talk, Dr. Alila challenges the outdated and flawed science behind BC’s forestry practices – calling it Voodoo Hydrology. He argues that cumulative disturbances from industrial forestry are raising the groundwater table, increasing hydro-geomorphic risk, and making landslides more likely.
This bold analysis is a direct challenge to the current framework guiding forestry and land-use policies in BC. As the province faces more frequent and devastating landslides, floods, and other environmental risks, Dr. Alila’s insights are meaningful to anyone concerned about the future of BC’s forests, water systems, and communities.

THE POWER OF FORESTS PROJECT:
The Power of Forests project is bringing together grassroots organizations, concerned BC residents, Indigenous Peoples, and scientists to call for a new BC Forest Act. The new Act is intended to ensure that forest management on public lands focuses on the interests of communities and nature rather than on extraction interests. Under this new legislation, the primary objective of forest management will be to maintain the ecological integrity of forest ecosystems. There is also emphasis on putting local communities in control, making sure decisions benefit BC residents, building stable community economies, growing local businesses, and supporting working families.
