Be a Friend to the Forest

In the good old days, forests took care of themselves.  Things have changed over the past 100 years and with the prevalence of industrial clear cut logging across BC, the natural functions of our forests are rapidly disappearing.

Intact forests manage our water for us.  Intact forests manage our climate for us.  When a forest is clear cut it loses its ability to manage water and climate.  The tree plantations that replace mature forests do not have the same ability to manage water.  In Grand Forks, water management is on everyone’s mind as we move into another spring freshet season.

Over the past 50 years in the Boundary watershed thousands of hectares of forests have been clear cut.  That means that many of the trees that are left are younger than 50 years old.  These young tree plantations do not serve wildlife or humans in the way that old and mature forests do.

BFWSS is trying to bring an end to destructive industrial forestry practices in our watershed.  There are alternatives to clear cutting that benefit humans and wildlife and nature.  The project we are undertaking, dubbed The CC Ecoplan, aims to implement an ecosystem based conservation plan that is co-managed by local citizens.  (The CC stands for citizen co-managed).

We aim to balance human and non-human use and ensure that forests (not just plantations) are here for the next generation.

We need your help to make this happen!

Our first major fundraising event is happening on Saturday, April 4.

Detailed schedule is coming soon.  Here’s what we’ve got now…..
