Sector report to KRWAC, June 24

The Kettle River Watershed Advisory Council (KRWAC) was initiated in 2012 (previously known as the Kettle River Watershed Authority) to “support the creation and review of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan (KRWMP)”. There are nine sectors making up the voting membership with two people per sector. These include: Agriculture, Forestry (Sm/Med), Forestry (Lg), Industry, (Community) Members at Large, Mining, NGO/Stewardship Groups, Tourism/Recreation, and Water System.

Our group, Boundary Forest Watershed Stewardship Society is represented by our Board Member, Ray Hanson.

There is the report he made at the KRWAC meeting on June 24, 2025:

KRWAC Sector Update

Boundary Forest Watershed Stewardship Society

1. We continue to advocate for a new Forest Act (that would see ecosystem directed stewardship, establish community-based decision making and rebuild community-based economies.)

2. We have joined forces with the IWTF or Interior Watershed Task Force (a coalition of more than twenty NGOs, Community Organizations and Professionals advocating for the legal protection and preservation of water, primary forests, wildlife and critical habitats in the Interior of BC.)

3. We are also advocating for a 3-Zone Forest Classification System – (protection of primary (natural forests), the restoration of some previously logged forest, and the better management of commercial forests.

4. We have embarked  on a small research water sampling project under the guidance of an ONA hydrologist and funding from BIWS (Boundary Integrated Watershed Service).

5. We have been meeting with and presenting to MLA Donegal Wilson.

6. We are  considering hosting a public viewing of the Narwal sponsored video ‘Trouble in the Headwaters’ (that  follows Dr. Younas Alilia, UBC Hydrology Professor through his study of the 2018 Kettle River flood).
